The Panthers have been busy bees when it comes to bolstering their secondary. First they trade for C.J.
Henderson and now they’ve added former DPOY Stephon Gilmore via a trade on Wednesday with New
England. Gilmore won’t be available for this game but acquiring him should bolster Carolina’s roster with the
belief this team is trying to win now. I started out looking for ways to talk myself into the Eagles keeping it
within this small number, but I’m not sure I can get there. The Eagles kept it closer with Kansas City than the
score would indicate, but the Panthers defense is miles better than the Chiefs. And while Carolina’s offensive line
is much worse than KC’s and Sam Darnold is not equal to Patrick Mahomes, Joe Brady and Co. have done
enough moving Darnold around and giving him designed runs to mitigate the pressure from Philly’s front. If

Christian McCaffrey comes back, it’s just a bonus.
The Panthers suffered their first loss last week, but after two straight on the road they return to face an Eagles
team that is 1-3. Philadelphia did some good things on offense against the Chiefs, but the defense had issues.
Carolina’s defense is coming off a tough game at Dallas, but I think they regroup here. It’s close, though.
With Edmunds and Benjamin questionable, James Conner may get an elevated workload against the 49er. The
former Steelers has rushed for 172 yards and four touchdowns through four games.
Matt Judon is a destructive force and he will wreak havoc in this game. Mac Jones can manage New England to
a solid 24 points here and the Texans aren’t scoring more than 10. I’m still not sold on New England’s offense
but it can play ball control in this game and can win handily with a conservative keep-it-simple-stupid
philosophy. Things are getting very bleak for the Texans and everybody in that locker room knows that a sell-off
is coming at the trade deadline.
The Patriots elevated three offensive linemen — James Ferentz, Alex Redmond, and William Sherman — to the
active roster. Two of those spots were COVID roster replacements. Redmond is projected to get the starting
nod at right guard, making his elevation to the roster significant for New England. Veteran Ted Karras is
projected to start at left guard with Onwenu out.
NFL insider notebook: Late-bloomer William Gholston worth the wait for Bucs, plus Week 5 picks
Gholston is playing out the final year of a five-year, $27.5 million deal he signed at the conclusion of his rookie
contract. It’s virtually unheard of for a player in today’s NFL to finish out a five-year deal, but that’s where
Gholston is. If he wanted an extension after a career year last season, it wasn’t going to happen with the Super
Bowl-winning Bucs likely (over)spending their cash budget to retain all 22 starters.
Jaguars: DL Roy Robertson-Harris (ankle) OUT; CB Tyson Campbell (toe), DE/OLB Larentee McCray

“Specifically, Detroit’s woeful secondary is ripe to be exposed here and Dalvin Cook is healthier than he’s been in
a few weeks. I do worry about guys like Will Harris penetrating some and giving Cousins some issues here and
there, but this is a chance for the Vikings to flex their muscles and get a blowout win, and I believe they have the
offensive firepower to do just that.”
CBS Sports’ John Breech on why he likes the Steelers by a field goal against Denver.
Jon Gruden has apologized for comments he reportedly made about NFLPA executive director DeMaurice
Smith in a 2011 email sent to then-Washington Football Team president Bruce Allen in 2011. The email was
sent as the league and the NFLPA were in the process of trying to end a lockout.
Several stars are nursing injuries and either trying to get on the field or still unable to make it back, and as usual,
plenty of other players have their statuses up in the air. Below, we will examine all the final injury reports for the
28 teams set to take the field on Sunday. If you have a question about a player’s status, this is the place to be.
Parker was limited in practice all week. With Will Fuller going on injured reserve, Miami is suddenly somewhat
thin at wide receiver and will be counting on Jaylen Waddle in a big way.
The nine-year vet and second-longest tenured Buccaneer is experiencing the best start to a season in his career
one year after his most productive campaign. Gholston has followed up his three-sack, 20-quarterback hit
performance from 2020 with two sacks and five QB hits through the first four games of this season.
We can tell you that White likes the New York Jets +3 this week, but to see all of his SuperContest picks and

Each of New England’s questionable players were limited participants during Friday’s practice. Cannon missed
the Texans’ practice on Friday, while Amendola was limited throughout the week.
Lions: LB Trey Flowers (knee), TE T.J. Hockenson (knee), LT Penei Sewell (ankle), RB D’Andre Swift (groin),
RB Jamaal William (hip) QUESTIONABLE
“No one wants to read any advanced stats about this matchup. I think everyone believes the Buccaneers will win
this game, but will they cover the spread? Jacoby Brissett isn’t very good, and he has to operate behind a bad
offensive line. Then the defense has allowed 25 plays of 20-plus yards, which is the most in the NFL. The
Dolphins lost by 10 points to the Indianapolis Colts at home last week, I’ll take the Buccaneers to roll.”
Russell Wilson stood helplessly on the sideline during the Seahawks’ loss to the Rams on Thursday night. Wilson
will remain on the sideline for the foreseeable future after rupturing a tendon in the middle finger of his throwing
hand during Thursday night’s game, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Wilson has undergone surgery on the
injury, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The injury has a typical recovery timetable of six weeks.
Week 5 NFL odds, picks: Rolling with Titans, Patriots and Vikings as big favorites
Russell Wilson expected to miss six weeks after undergoing surgery on his finger, per report
Week 5 NFL odds, picks: Rolling with Titans, Patriots and Vikings as big favorites
Fading Russell Wilson in prime time feels like a terrible idea. But the Seahawks should be 1-3 at best after they
got beat up in the box score by San Francisco but escaped with a win. The Rams were do for a letdown last
week after beating up on Tom Brady and the Bucs the prior week. Now they’re angry and should come out
slinging all over a questionable Seattle defense. I think we get a ton of points in this one and Matthew Stafford
and Co. come out ahead.
Missing Milano would be killer against the Chiefs, as he would presumably play a big role in the Bills’ coverage
plans against Travis Kelce. Epenesa has been one of the team’s better pass rushers this year, and solidifying the
rush was a big offseason priority for Buffalo largely because of its impact in this matchup. If he can’t go, Jerry
Hughes, Mario Addison, Gregory Rousseau, and more would see increased roles.
Laying the points with the Cowboys is one of my Locks of the Week that I dropped in my column this week. So
far this season, my Locks of the Week are 14-5-2 ATS. Check them out here.
And then this is the night game? What a weekend of action. I’m sure some people will be in on the under here
and I don’t blame them based on the insanely high total. No chance I get in front of this moving train, though.
Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen could put up some big-time numbers in this game, even with the Bills playing
some really good defense (No. 1 in DVOA) lately. It’s hard to imagine their best effort nullifying the Chiefs,
although Buffalo winning wouldn’t shock me. Given the stakes and the stage and the home-field advantage, I’ll
still take the Chiefs here. But this game is just going to be awesome. Sit back and enjoy it.
So no, he didn’t get approval from Khan. He just told the GM — a guy holding on for dear life to his own job —
several weeks ago, and that sort of line makes it seem as though if there were any issue, Baalke should have
been the one to tell Meyer not to do the thing that obviously Meyer shouldn’t have done.

Packers to move to 4-1 on the season. To read more of Brinson’s pick, head on over to CBS Sports.
Vikings: DL Michael Pierce (elbow), WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette (toe) OUT; RB Dalvin Cook (ankle)
QUESTIONABLE
In this contest with the Bills, Hartstein sees a clear advantage for one of these AFC powerhouses. To see which
way he’s leaning, head on over to SportsLine.
Seattle is prepared to move forward with Geno Smith, who went 10 of 17 with 131 yards with a touchdown and
an interception in Thursday night’s 26-17 loss. A nine-year veteran, Smith’s fourth-quarter touchdown pass to
D.K. Metcalf was his first touchdown pass since the 2017 season. The former Jet and Charger has a 12-19
career record as an NFL starting quarterback.
Seattle is currently 2-3 and in last place in the NFC West division. The Seahawks’ next three games are at
Pittsburgh on Sunday night and at home against the 2-2 Saints and the 0-4 Jaguars before a Week 9 bye.
